Building Codes

Most cities and towns of any size have instituted building codes that protect the public against injury to life and property. The types of construction, quality of materials, floor loads, allowable stresses and many other requirements relating to buildings are covered by these codes. Codes are generally administered by a building department or a local building official, which examines and approves plans of proposed buildings. These officials will visit buildings during construction to make sure they are being constructed according to the drawings approved by themselves or the building department.

Codes vary widely in their requirements, from city to city, and county to county. It is imperative to become familiar with the various codes and regulations enforced in your specific market area.
